About This Coin
The 1863 Liberty Head Eagle is a United States Gold Eagle from the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. The Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints struck about 11,250 eagles dated 1863, including 30 proofs; the Mint's Philadelphia total of 1,248 counts those proofs, leaving 1,218 business strikes. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Civil War-era production continued at Philadelphia and San Francisco in limited quantities. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
