About This Coin
The 1839 Liberty Head Eagle is a United States Gold Eagle from the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series — the second year of the series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 38,253 eagles dated 1839, including an estimated 5 proofs. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Second year of production, with the Philadelphia Mint refining the design's striking characteristics. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Designed by Christian Gobrecht.
