Description

This bronze medal struck from gunmetal dies reproduces the William Washington at Cowpens design (Betts-594), produced during the 1863-85 period. The designation "gunmetal dies" indicates that the striking dies themselves were made from gunmetal — an alloy of copper, tin, and zinc traditionally used for cannon — rather than the standard hardened steel. Gunmetal dies produce a subtly different impression than steel dies, with softer detail edges and a distinctive surface texture. The use of gunmetal for die production was sometimes a practical choice when steel of sufficient quality was unavailable, or an intentional artistic decision to produce a particular aesthetic. This intermediate-period striking of the Comitia Americana William Washington medal falls between the main Paris Mint restrike campaigns.

Rarity Notes

Gunmetal dies striking, 1863-85 period. Unusual die material makes this a distinctive variant. Scarce.
