Description

Judd-295, Pollock-347, is the third 1862 proof half dollar motto pattern. This variety represents a copper striking of one of the motto placement designs tested in silver as J-293 or J-294. Copper half dollar patterns allowed the Mint to produce more examples for distribution at lower cost, expanding the pool of officials and collectors who could evaluate the proposed designs. The darker copper surface provides a different visual impression of the motto placement than the bright silver version, and both compositions would have been examined when making the final design decision.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-6. Approximately 15-20 specimens known in copper. Copper strikings are typically more available than silver for this series.
