Description

Judd-293, Pollock-345, is the first of four 1862 proof half dollar patterns that continued the GOD OUR TRUST motto experimentation begun in 1861. The 1862 half dollar patterns (J-293 through J-296) form a systematic matrix testing different combinations of motto placement and metallic composition. J-293 features the Seated Liberty obverse with the motto on a scroll positioned above the heraldic eagle on the reverse, struck in silver. This series represents the refinement phase of the motto development, building on lessons learned from the 1861 patterns and moving closer to the final design that would be adopted.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-6. Approximately 15-20 specimens known. The 1862 motto half dollars are slightly more available than the 1861 series. Auction prices range from $5,000-$15,000.
