Description

Judd-276, Pollock-328, is the second 1861 proof quarter pattern featuring the GOD OUR TRUST motto in an alternative arrangement from J-275. Together these two quarter patterns and the four half dollar patterns (J-277 through J-280) constitute the core of the 1861 motto experimentation program that would eventually lead to IN GOD WE TRUST appearing on all US coinage. The quarter denomination would not receive the motto until 1866, when the With Motto Seated Liberty quarter entered production. This proof silver pattern provides a five-year preview of that change, documenting an early stage of the design development process.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-6 to R-7. Approximately 10-15 specimens known. Comparable in rarity to J-275.
