Description
Judd-287, Pollock-339, completes the series of 1861 proof eagle patterns. This copper striking represents the fourth distinct design variation tested for the ten-dollar denomination during the first year of the Civil War. The breadth of experimentation across J-284 through J-287 indicates that the Mint was seriously considering a redesign of the eagle coinage, though ultimately the Liberty Head design would continue in production through 1907. The combination of wartime distractions and conservative institutional preference for established designs contributed to the decision not to adopt any of these experimental concepts.
Rarity Notes
