Description
Judd-285, Pollock-337, is a proof eagle pattern in copper struck from experimental dies during 1861. The copper composition allowed the Mint to produce more specimens at lower cost than gold strikings, making the design available to a wider circle of collectors and officials for evaluation. The Liberty Head eagle design on the obverse pairs with an experimental reverse variation, documenting the Mint's continued interest in refining the eagle denomination's appearance. Copper eagle-sized patterns have a distinctive feel compared to their gold counterparts, being noticeably lighter due to copper's lower density.
Rarity Notes
Rarity-6 to R-7. Approximately 10-15 specimens known in copper. More available than the gold strikings of related patterns.
