Description
This gilt copper specimen of Judd-285 was created by applying a thin layer of gold to the copper pattern, simulating the appearance of a gold striking. The gilt finish gives the piece the warm yellow appearance of a gold eagle while retaining the lower-cost copper base. Gilt copper patterns were produced at the Philadelphia Mint as a compromise between the expense of gold strikings and the unrepresentative appearance of plain copper. These pieces allowed collectors to build sets of patterns that visually approximated the intended final designs in their proper metal, though at a fraction of the cost of actual gold specimens.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. Gilt versions typically survive in smaller numbers than plain copper strikings. Estimated 3-5 specimens.
