Description

This is the copy of the Sommer Islands shilling made by Montroville Wilson Dickeson of Philadelphia in the 1850s. Montroville Wilson Dickeson of Philadelphia struck copies of the Sommer Islands shilling in the 1850s; Kenney lists the copy under Dickeson as no. 1, and examples are known in copper, brass, nickel and white metal. The copy follows the originals closely but not exactly: its legend has stars where the originals have stops, and the ship shows a puff of smoke from a firing cannon. Its ship die was also paired with other dies, and the resulting mules carry their own Whitman (W-) and Kenney numbers in the PCGS listings. This example is struck in copper. It is catalogued as Kenney-1 and W-15400. The genuine coin it imitates is listed in the catalog as (1616) Sommer Islands Shilling - Small Sails.
