Description
The 1859 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-253 is a proof half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Early Republic Patterns (1792-1859) series. It is a two-headed piece with Anthony C. Paquet's Seated Liberty on one side and the French Head of Liberty on the other; USPatterns calls it a fantasy and notes an example in the April 1865 Levick sale. Struck during the California Gold Rush era, when vast quantities of western gold transformed the American economy and led to new denominations. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.44 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #12012. Reference data: struck in silver with a reeded edge, rated R-7.
