Description
Judd-253 is the final numbered entry in the extensive 1859 half dollar pattern series, representing the highest standard Judd number assigned to this denomination for the year. This silver pattern features a die combination from the Paquet series with an experimental obverse and a wreath reverse enclosing the denomination. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, J-253 is among the rarer varieties in the series. As the concluding entry in the 1859 half dollar pattern sequence, J-253 marks the end of what was arguably the most ambitious half dollar design review in American Mint history. Taken together, the J-235 through J-253 series encompasses Longacre's "French Head" obverse, Paquet's Seated Liberty with fasces obverse, multiple wreath reverse configurations, and strikings in silver and copper, creating a comprehensive record of the Mint's design explorations during this pivotal pre-Civil War year.
