Description

Judd-238 is a copper striking of the 1859 French Head half dollar pattern with the cereal wreath reverse. The obverse displays Longacre's "French Head of Liberty" facing right with a crown of oak and vine leaves, while the reverse features the cereal wreath enclosing HALF DOL. -- the same die combination as the silver J-237. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, J-238 presents the design in warm brown and red-brown tones that contrast with the silver version's appearance. Copper strikings in the 1859 half dollar pattern series were produced in smaller quantities than the silver versions, making them somewhat scarcer. The cereal wreath reverse on this pattern is among the most beautifully executed wreath designs in the American pattern series, with intricate details of various agricultural plants rendered in high relief.
