Description
The 1859 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-251 is a proof half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Early Republic Patterns (1792-1859) series. It pairs Anthony C. Paquet's Seated Liberty obverse with 50 CENTS in a cereal wreath; USPatterns believes these are restrikes of the mid-1860s to early 1870s, from a rusted reverse die. Struck during the California Gold Rush era, when vast quantities of western gold transformed the American economy and led to new denominations. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.44 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #12006. Reference data: struck in silver with a reeded edge, rated R-7.
