Description

Judd-251 is a silver pattern half dollar featuring a die combination from the 1859 Paquet series. The obverse uses one of Paquet's experimental Liberty designs, while the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, J-251 represents another variation in the systematic design testing conducted during 1859. The PCGS Set Registry for the 1859 Longacre and Paquet Half Dollar Patterns includes 20 required entries, and J-251 is among the scarcer die combinations in this series. The coin was produced as part of Director Snowden's expansive pattern program, which generated more die combinations for the half dollar denomination in 1859 than in any other single year. Each variety preserves a different combination of obverse portrait, reverse wreath, and denomination expression.
