Description
The 1859 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-250 is a proof half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Early Republic Patterns (1792-1859) series. It is the copper striking of Judd-249, Paquet's Seated Liberty obverse with 1/2 DOLLAR in a cereal wreath; USPatterns confirms two. Struck during the California Gold Rush era, when vast quantities of western gold transformed the American economy and led to new denominations. Struck in copper, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #12002. Reference data: struck in copper with a reeded edge, rated R-7. Catalogued as Judd-250, Pollock-289, A/W 287. these were struck from rusted dies in the 1860s or 1870s.
