Description
The 1859 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-249 is a proof half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Early Republic Patterns (1792-1859) series. It pairs Anthony C. Paquet's Seated Liberty obverse with 1/2 DOLLAR in a cereal wreath; USPatterns notes die rust on the reverse and thinks these were probably struck in the 1870s for sale to collectors. Struck during the California Gold Rush era, when vast quantities of western gold transformed the American economy and led to new denominations. Struck in silver, weighing 12.44 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #12000. Reference data: struck in silver with a reeded edge, rated R-7.
