Description
Judd-248 is a copper striking of the Paquet Seated Liberty with fasces obverse and cereal wreath reverse half dollar pattern, sharing the same die combination as the silver J-247. The obverse features Paquet's seated Liberty design with fasces and shield, while the reverse displays the cereal wreath enclosing HALF DOLLAR. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, J-248 presents this design combination in warm brown tones. Copper strikings of the Paquet obverse patterns are rarer than their silver counterparts in the 1859 series. The Paquet Seated Liberty design represents a significant departure from the traditional Gobrecht Seated Liberty, with Liberty holding a fasces (a Roman symbol of authority) rather than the liberty cap on a pole seen on the standard obverse. Fewer than six examples are known in copper.
