Description

Judd-247 is a silver pattern half dollar featuring Paquet's Liberty Seated with fasces obverse paired with the cereal wreath reverse enclosing HALF DOLLAR. Unlike the French Head obverse patterns (J-235 through J-242), J-247 uses Paquet's seated Liberty design where Liberty is seated supporting a fasces with her right hand and a shield with her left, with thirteen small stars around the periphery and the date 1859 in exergue. The reverse displays the same cereal wreath design used on other 1859 half dollar patterns, with the full denomination HALF DOLLAR. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, J-247 is among the rarest die combinations in the 1859 half dollar pattern series, with fewer than a half dozen examples known in each metal. This design combination pairs Paquet's most accomplished obverse with the wreath reverse that was ultimately chosen for use on the Seated Liberty dime.
