Description
Judd-246 is a copper striking of the 1859 French Head half dollar pattern with the full HALF DOLLAR denomination reverse, sharing the same die combination as the silver J-245. The obverse displays Longacre's "French Head of Liberty" facing right with the crown of oak and vine leaves. The reverse features the cereal wreath enclosing HALF DOLLAR spelled out in full. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, J-246 is quite rare within the 1859 half dollar pattern series. Copper versions of the scarcer die combinations in this series are among the most difficult to locate, as fewer were produced compared to the more popular silver versions. The warm brown and red-brown tones of the copper composition give this pattern a distinctive appearance that contrasts with the cool luster of its silver counterpart.
