Description
Judd-243 is a silver pattern half dollar that pairs Longacre's French Head obverse with the regular Seated Liberty half dollar reverse die. The coin was struck in silver with a reeded edge. Such mule patterns were produced at the Mint under Director Snowden's permissive attitude toward pattern production for collector sale and trade. USPatterns thinks these were probably restruck around 1866-1867 and confirms three or four in silver. Cataloged as PCGS #11984. Reference data: struck in silver with a reeded edge, rated R-7. Catalogued as Judd-243, Pollock-299, A/W 301. These are probably fantasy pieces using the same reverse die as J95-J96/P103-P104 and/or J538/P602.
