Description

This 1859-dated octagonal gold quarter dollar is Breen-Gillio BG-703, a Period Two piece of California fractional gold. NGC lists it with a Liberty head on the obverse. It is attributed to Frontier, Deviercy & Co.. Breen and Gillio put the jewelers' issues of 1858-1882 (1859-1882 in their first edition) into Period Two; most were lighter than their face value and were sold as charms and keepsakes, until the Secret Service enforced the 1864 ban on private coinage in 1883. Catalogue number: BG-703. PCGS number 10530.
