Description

This proof striking of Judd-182 (Pollock-213) presents the iconic 1856 Flying Eagle cent design in bronze composition. The obverse and reverse designs match the standard J-180 layout — the Flying Eagle with stars and date on the front, ONE CENT within a wreath on the back — but the bronze alloy distinguishes it from both the common copper-nickel version and the copper J-181. Bronze, composed primarily of copper and tin, produces a distinctive reddish-gold color when freshly struck that differs subtly from pure copper. The Mint explored this alloy as a potential alternative for the small cent, and while copper-nickel was initially chosen for the 1857-1858 issues, bronze would ultimately prevail when the Indian Head cent transitioned to that composition in 1864. This proof striking with its plain edge was produced in very limited numbers for presentation or collector purposes, and it remains a scarce entry in the comprehensive catalog of 1856 Flying Eagle cent varieties.
