Description
The 1855 Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Small Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1854-1856 series. The U.S. Mint produced 758,269 examples, making this the highest mintage among 4 variants, accounting for 92% of the year's production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a smaller head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. The 1855-C (Charlotte, mintage 9,803) and 1855-D (Dahlonega, mintage 1,811) are major rarities. The 1855-D is one of the rarest regular-issue U.S. gold coins. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $550 to $5.7K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7532.
