Description
The 1855 (O) Liberty Gold Dollar is a Gold Dollar produced at the New Orleans Mint as part of the Small Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1854-1856 series. With a mintage of 55,000, this is a less common issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 7% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a smaller head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. The 1855-C (Charlotte, mintage 9,803) and 1855-D (Dahlonega, mintage 1,811) are major rarities. The 1855-D is one of the rarest regular-issue U.S. gold coins. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their historical Southern provenance. Estimated market value ranges from $1.1K to $37K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7535.
