Description
Part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series, the 1854 (O) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle from the New Orleans Mint. With a mintage of 153,000, this is a less common issue — ranked 4th of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 20% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1854-S with only 246 struck is a legendary rarity — one of the rarest regular-issue U.S. coins. New Orleans's branch mint, active from 1838 through 1909, produced coins that carry a distinct historical significance tied to the antebellum and postbellum South. Estimated market value ranges from $1.0K to $12K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7772.
