Description
The 1854 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 collection. The U.S. Mint produced 596,258 examples, making this the highest mintage among 5 variants, accounting for 79% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1854-S with only 246 struck is a legendary rarity — one of the rarest regular-issue U.S. coins. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $1.8K depending on grade and condition.
