Description
The 1854 (O) Liberty Head Eagle - Large Date represents a New Orleans Mint issue from the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. New Orleans struck 52,500 eagles dated 1854 in total, Large Date and Small Date together; how the figure divides is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. San Francisco eagle production established. Philadelphia and New Orleans continued. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #98614.
