Description
The 1854 (O) Liberty Head Eagle - Large Date represents a New Orleans Mint issue from the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. With a mintage of 52,500, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 4 mint variants, representing only 19% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. San Francisco eagle production established. Philadelphia and New Orleans continued. Coined at the New Orleans Mint, which served the nation's southern economy from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their regional character. Estimated market value ranges from $2.6K to $16K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
