Description
Judd-150, Pollock-178, rated Low R.7. This thick planchet variety shares the same die pairing used across the J-149 through J-151 series: the standard 1853 quarter eagle obverse paired with the ONE CENT wreath reverse. Like other J-150 specimens, it is struck in an alloy of 30% nickel, 60% copper, and 10% tin with a reeded edge, and exhibits the characteristic light repunching on the E in CENT. What distinguishes this piece is its noticeably thicker planchet, suggesting the Mint was testing not only different alloy compositions but also varying planchet thicknesses to determine ideal specifications for the proposed small cent. The thicker format would have increased the coin's weight and altered its feel in hand, factors the Mint needed to evaluate alongside metallurgical properties.
