1853 Proof Cent Pattern - J-150
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-150, Pollock-178, rated Low R.7. This pattern shares the same die pairing as the J-149, using the regular 1853 quarter eagle obverse with the ONE CENT wreath reverse, but is struck in a distinct alloy of 30% nickel, 60% copper, and 10% tin. A subtle die feature helps identify genuine specimens: the letter E in CENT on the reverse shows a light but wide repunching to the north. The reeded edge matches the other varieties in this series. As one of three closely related compositions tested from this die pair (along with J-149 and J-151), the J-150 demonstrates the Mint's systematic approach to alloy experimentation. The higher copper content in this formulation would have reduced production costs compared to the more nickel-heavy J-149 alloy. Fewer than a dozen examples survive.
