Description

An exceptionally early pre-cud variety, PC-25c-1853-01R documents a reverse rim-area die crack on an 1853 Seated Liberty Quarter of the Arrows and Rays subtype — a single-year transitional design that existed only in 1853 to mark the Act of February 21, 1853 weight reduction from 6.68 to 6.22 grams. The Arrows and Rays combination lasted just one year before the rays were removed in 1854 (arrows continued through 1855), making any die variety on this subtype inherently scarce and historically significant as documentation of die behavior during a pivotal monetary transition. Pre-cuds capture the moment when a die crack has isolated a rim-area fragment without that piece separating, and on coinage from 1853 this records the mechanical stresses experienced by dies striking the newly lightened planchets. The reverse of the Arrows and Rays quarter features a heraldic eagle surrounded by the rays that give the type its name. First cataloged pre-cud for this date and type combination.
