Description

Second cud error recorded on the 1853 Seated Liberty Quarter with Arrows and Rays, a one-year subtype where arrows flanking the date and rays surrounding the reverse eagle signaled the weight reduction mandated by the Act of February 21, 1853. When a section of the die rim fractured and separated, striking pressure forced planchet metal into the resulting void, producing the characteristic raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. Pre-Civil War cud errors are exceptionally scarce in the numismatic record because survival rates for circulated copper-nickel and silver coinage drop sharply with age. The Arrows and Rays design was used only in 1853, making any die variety on this subtype particularly notable to Seated Liberty specialists. Philadelphia produced approximately 15.2 million quarters in 1853, a dramatic increase driven by the reduced silver content.
