Description
The 1848 (D) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle from the Dahlonega Mint, belonging to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. The Dahlonega Mint struck 13,771 quarter eagles dated 1848. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. The 1848 CAL. quarter eagles were struck from 228 ounces of California gold that Secretary of War William L. Marcy sent to the Philadelphia Mint. Dahlonega's Georgia mint operated from 1838 to 1861, processing Appalachian gold into coins. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7751.
