Description
The 1848 (C) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle represents a Charlotte Mint issue from the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. The Charlotte Mint struck 16,788 quarter eagles dated 1848. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. The 1848 CAL. quarter eagles were struck from 228 ounces of California gold that Secretary of War William L. Marcy sent to the Philadelphia Mint. The Charlotte Mint in North Carolina struck gold coins exclusively from 1838 until the Civil War forced its closure in 1861. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7750.
