First pre-cud cataloged for the 1847 Braided Hair large cent with the 47/47 repunched date by the Cuds on Coins attribution service, PC-1c-1847-01R documents a reverse die rim fracture on one of the later dates in the large cent denomination's long production history. The catalog designation follows standard format: PC for pre-cud, 1c for one cent, 1847 for date, 01 for the first documented variety, and R indicating the reverse die is affected. Christian Gobrecht's Braided Hair design, introduced in 1839 as a modification of the Coronet type, depicts Liberty facing left with her hair elaborately braided and bound with a cord, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. The host coin — the 1847 large cent with repunched date (47 punched over 47) — already carries its own independent variety attribution as a repunched date, meaning this pre-cud adds a second collectible die characteristic to the same coin.
