1846 Braided Hair Coronet Head Cent - Small Date - CU-1C-1846-02 Rim Cud

Description

This rim cud on an 1846 Braided Hair cent records the loss of part of the die's rim gutter, which appears on the coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The Braided Hair design, created by Christian Gobrecht, served as the final large cent type from 1839 through 1857 — heavy copper coins approximately 10.89 grams at 27.5mm diameter that constitute a distinct collecting specialty. Cents of 1846 come with a Small, Medium or Tall Date; the photos of this coin rule out the Tall Date but do not settle Small against Medium. Die varieties on pre-Civil War copper are cataloged through the Newcomb numbering system and supplemented by Walter Breen's references, though cuds are tracked separately by Cuds on Coins.
