Description

Carrying the "01R" suffix that distinguishes it from the standard CU-1C-1846-01 listing, this retained rim cud on the 1846 Braided Hair cent preserves a die fragment that cracked at the rim but remained partially connected to the die body during continued striking. The retained fragment creates a distinctive raised area on struck coins that differs from a standard cud's featureless blob — because the broken piece stays in approximate position, some faint design detail may persist within the affected zone, or the raised area may show stepped or terraced characteristics as the fragment shifts incrementally with each successive strike. On Christian Gobrecht's Braided Hair design, the obverse rim carries thirteen stars and the date in positions where die steel is thinnest, making the 6:00-to-3:00 and 9:00-to-12:00 rim segments structurally vulnerable to cracking. The 1846 Small Date Braided Hair cent, with its multiple documented cuds (CU-1C-1846-1, -2, -3, and this retained variant), presents one of the richest rim-failure case studies in the large cent series. No additional cross-references beyond the Cuds on Coins catalog exist for this variety. Retained cuds are inherently scarcer than their fully separated counterparts because the retention phase is typically brief — the fragment eventually breaks free completely, converting the die to a standard cud-producing state for the remainder of its service life.
