Description

The 1843 (O) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle - Large Date is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the New Orleans Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 76,000, this is a less common issue — ranked 6th of 8 mint variants by mintage, with 13% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Large and small date varieties exist for the Philadelphia issue. Four mints struck quarter eagles this year. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their historical Southern provenance. Estimated market value ranges from $1.1K to $31K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
