Description
The 1843 (C) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle - Large Date, struck at the Charlotte Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 collection. With a mintage of 23,076, this is a scarce issue — ranked 3rd of 8 mint variants by mintage, with 4% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Large and small date varieties exist for the Philadelphia issue. Four mints struck quarter eagles this year. The Charlotte Mint in North Carolina struck gold coins exclusively from 1838 until the Civil War forced its closure in 1861. Estimated market value ranges from $3.0K to $27K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7728.
