Description

This silver restrike of the Battle of Cowpens medal (Betts-595) was produced at the Paris Mint circa 1841-42, identifiable by its anchor edge mark denoting that production period. The original Cowpens medal was authorized by the Continental Congress on March 9, 1781 to honor Brigadier General Daniel Morgan for his decisive victory at the Battle of Cowpens on January 17, 1781, a turning point in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. The obverse features a portrait of Morgan, while the reverse depicts the battle scene. Augustin Dupre engraved the original dies in Paris. This early restrike predates the main Paris Mint restrike campaigns of the later nineteenth century, making it among the first generation of reproductions. The anchor edge mark is a key diagnostic for dating Paris Mint products of this era.

Rarity Notes

Early Paris Mint restrike in silver, 1841-42 period. Anchor edge mark. Scarce — fewer restrikes produced in this early period than in later campaigns.
