Description
The 1839 Liberty Head Eagle - Type of 1840 is a Gold Eagle minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. With a mintage of 12,447, this is a scarce issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Second year of production, with the Philadelphia Mint refining the design's striking characteristics. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $6.3K to $156K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.7 grams, 26.8 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8580.
