Description
The 1839 Liberty Head Eagle - Type of 1840 is a Gold Eagle minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 12,447 eagles of the Type of 1840 dated 1839. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Second year of production, with the Philadelphia Mint refining the design's striking characteristics. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8580.
