About This Coin
The 1839 Gobrecht Dollar is a United States dollar from the Gobrecht Dollars (1836-1839) series — the final year of the series. In 1839, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a combined mintage of 300. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right without stars and the reverse displays an eagle in flight amid a field of stars. The final Gobrecht Dollars were struck, transitioning to the standard Seated Liberty Dollar in 1840. Restrikes from the 1850s-1860s with misaligned dies are more commonly encountered than originals. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 39 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Estimated market value across variants is approximately $47K. A notable auction result reached $173K in PR66 grade at American Numismatic Rarities. Designed by Christian Gobrecht.
