Description

The circa 1839 bronze military medal cataloged as Julian MI-7 honors Brigadier General Daniel Morgan at the Battle of Cowpens and was struck from the Duvivier restrike dies that replaced the original Augustin Dupre dies. The distinction between original Dupre dies and the Duvivier restrike dies is an important collecting point, as the two die sets produce visually distinguishable medals that are cataloged and collected separately. The obverse reproduces Morgan's military portrait from the Duvivier dies. The reverse carries the Cowpens commemorative imagery. The circa 1839 production date places this among the earlier restrike productions from the replacement dies. The original Morgan medal was engraved by Augustin Dupre, one of the most accomplished die sinkers of the late eighteenth century, who also created the famous Libertas Americana medal. When the original dies eventually wore out, replacement dies were cut by Duvivier to continue production. Bronze restrikes from both die sets are collected by specialists in Revolutionary War medals and early American numismatic art.

Rarity Notes

Bronze from Duvivier restrike dies circa 1839. Earlier restrikes from replacement dies are scarcer than later productions.
