Description
The 1838 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-84, Original is an original striking of the 1838 Gobrecht dollar in silver with a reeded edge. The design follows the 1836 dollar with 13 stars added around Liberty, the 26 stars removed from the reverse field and an extra clump of feathers below the eagle's neck (uspatterns.com). Saul Teichman lists only two originals, one in die alignment III and one in alignment IV; restrikes from the same dies show later die states. Reference data: struck in silver with a reeded edge. Catalogued as Judd-84, Pollock-93, A/W 65, Taxay EP107.
