1837 Proof Half Dollar Pattern - J-A1837-2
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-A1837-2 is an extremely rare pattern half dollar bearing the date 1837, making it a notable exception to the general observation that no patterns are known dated 1837. While certain 1836-dated Gobrecht silver dollars were struck in early 1837, the J-A1837-2 carries the actual 1837 date on its dies. The obverse features the Capped Bust or transitional Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht, as the Mint was actively experimenting with new half dollar designs during this period. The reverse displays a standard eagle design consistent with half dollar patterns of the 1836-1839 series. Struck in silver with proof surfaces, this coin represents the transitional period between the older Capped Bust designs and the new Liberty Seated motifs that Gobrecht was developing. The "A" prefix in the Judd number indicates this variety was added in later editions of the Judd reference, supplementing the original numbering sequence.
