Description

Judd-50 is a proof striking of the 1834 Capped Bust quarter, produced at the Philadelphia Mint for inclusion in the diplomatic presentation proof sets assembled as gifts for foreign rulers. On November 11, 1834, Secretary of State John Forsythe requested that Mint Director Samuel Moore prepare two complete proof sets for the King of Siam and the Sultan of Muscat, housed in yellow and red morocco leather cases. The obverse features the Capped Bust portrait of Liberty facing left, while the reverse displays the eagle design. These proofs were struck from the Browning-2 die marriage, identifiable by the distinctive tongued (langued) eagle on the reverse, a detail not found on the four die marriages used for business strikes. An estimated 10 proof 1834 quarters were struck, with approximately 7 survivors known today. These coins are among the most historically significant American proof coins, directly tied to the diplomatic program that also produced the legendary 1804 dollars and eagles.
