Description

Predating the California Gold Rush by seventeen years, this 1832 Capped Bust half dime carries repunched lettering on its reverse, cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1832 HD WRPL-001 and cross-referenced as Breen 12 in Walter Breen's comprehensive early American coinage reference. A die scratch extending west from the rim above the M in AMERICA on the reverse provides a secondary attribution marker beyond the repunched lettering itself. Repunched lettering varieties occur when individual letter punches were applied to the die and then restruck in a slightly different position, leaving traces of the initial punch beneath or beside the corrected letter. This manual process was standard for early 19th-century die preparation at the Philadelphia Mint, where skilled engravers individually punched each letter, numeral, and design element into working dies by hand. William Kneass served as Chief Engraver during 1832, overseeing die production for all denominations. The Capped Bust half dime series (1829-1837) features John Reich's modified Liberty portrait wearing a mobcap, paired with an eagle reverse that provided ample lettering in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA for repunching to occur. Total half dime production in 1832 reached 965,000 pieces across three major die marriages, a modest figure that limits the available population. The Breen 12 cross-reference anchors this variety within the broader pre-Civil War half dime die study, connecting Wexler's modern attribution framework to Breen's earlier die variety research and providing collectors with dual-system confirmation of the repunched lettering.
