About This Coin
The 1828 Capped Bust Dime is a United States dime from the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series — 11th of 20 years in the series. In 1828, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a combined mintage of 125,005. This ranks 5th of 20 years by total mintage, below the series median of 1.0 million. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reduced-size type was introduced, with a smaller diameter and reeded edge. Both large and small sizes may have been struck this year. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, with a reeded edge. Across its variants, estimated values range from $86 to $8.6K depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $49K in MS64+ grade at Heritage Auctions.
