About This Coin

The 1824 Capped Bust Dime is a United States dime from the Capped Bust Dimes 1809-1837 series. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban, while the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Designed by John Reich. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 2.7 grams, 19 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint. The Capped Bust Dime was produced in two major types: a large-diameter version (1809-1828) and a smaller version with a reeded edge (1828-1837) designed for use with the new close-collar striking technology. Rich in die varieties cataloged in the JR (John Reich) reference system. The 1822 is a key date.
