Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The circa 1824-1885 bronze military medal cataloged as Julian MI-16 honors Major General Alexander Macomb at the Battle of Plattsburgh. This bronze duplicate was produced across the 1824-1885 restrike period, providing collectors with an affordable alternative to the original gold presentation medal. The obverse reproduces Macomb's military portrait, and the reverse carries the Plattsburgh commemorative design. Bronze duplicates were the standard format sold by the Mint to the public, allowing broad access to the designs of Congressional gold medals. Macomb's defense of Plattsburgh required coordinating land and naval forces against a numerically superior British invasion force under Sir George Prevost, the Governor General of Canada. When Macdonough's naval victory on Lake Champlain eliminated British supply and retreat capabilities, Prevost withdrew his army back to Canada despite holding a significant numerical advantage on land. The combined victory secured the northern frontier and influenced the peace negotiations at Ghent.
Rarity Notes
Bronze duplicates produced across the 1824-1885 restrike period. Moderate collector demand reflects Macomb's lesser public profile compared to Jackson or other War of 1812 commanders.
