Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The circa 1824-1885 bronze military medal cataloged as Julian MI-15 honors Major General Andrew Jackson for his decisive victory at the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815. Jackson's outnumbered force of regulars, militia, free Black soldiers, Baratarian pirates, and Choctaw warriors decimated a veteran British army in one of the most lopsided American victories in military history, killing over 2,000 British soldiers while suffering fewer than 100 casualties. The obverse features Jackson's portrait in military dress. The reverse carries commemorative imagery of the New Orleans battle. The date range 1824-1885 indicates this bronze duplicate was produced during one of several restrike periods that spanned over sixty years of Mint production. The Battle of New Orleans made Jackson the most famous military hero since Washington and launched his political career, culminating in his election as the seventh president in 1828. Though the battle was fought after the Treaty of Ghent had been signed ending the War of 1812, news of the peace had not yet reached New Orleans. The victory's psychological impact on American national identity was enormous, establishing the young republic's martial credibility on the world stage.
Rarity Notes
Bronze duplicates produced across multiple restrike periods from 1824 to 1885. Jackson's enormous fame ensures strong collector demand across all production periods.
