Description
The 1818 Texas Jola Half Real - Small Planchet is filed under Texas Jolas in the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series. Jolas were copper half reales made for small change at San Antonio de Béxar in Spanish Texas (search). Manuel Barrera struck pieces dated 1817 with his initials MB; they were replaced late in 1818 by pieces with JAG for José Antonio de la Garza, the local postmaster, and holders of Barrera's coppers were to exchange them (search). Many of the 1818 pieces known today were found along the San Antonio River in 1959 (search). PCGS lists it as #661.
